Final Bentley Arnage Limousine
Bentley has marked the end of its flagship leviathan, the Arnage by announcing an end-of-the-line Final Series, set to debut in Paris next week.
The Arnage and its Rolls-Royce-branded sibling, the Silver Seraph, were introduced in the spring of 1998 and were the first entirely new designs for the two marques since 1980. At over 5 m long and 1.9 m wide, and with a curb weight of more than 2.5 metric tonnes, it was the most powerful and fastest four-door saloon on the market, albeit for a brief period
The Final Series will be limited to a production run of just 150, all with the Arnage's very-well-tried and very-well-tested twin-turbo 6.75-litre V8 pumping out 500bhp and 738lb ft of torque. Following these last few cars, it'll be put to rest after 10 years of production.
That's the higher state of tune for the big V8, but the Final Series gets plenty of posh kit to go with the grunt: four Bentley umbrellas mounted in the boot, a rear cocktail cabinet complete with a bespoke stainless steel flask! And, there is lots of posh 'Final Series' badging, which is scattered liberally around the car.
But what has Bentley got in store for the future? Could the demise of the Arnage be followed by another flagship model that could be even more upmarket, like a V8 Phantom rival? We will have to wait and see. It seems the high price of oil and the green brigade show no compassion for iconic motoring marques. Ironically, as the V8 enters its 50th year of production - albeit with a few alterations over the years - its emissions are now 99 per cent lower than in 1958!
The fact that the Arnage is going out of production means that a once exclusive car is going to become even more exclusive and harder to find. While time and age may not weary a properly maintained Bentley, these once prestigious cars will eventually evolve into ‘classic’ limousines.
